GUOD SCORING. FRANK, OF NELSON, LEADS THE AGGREGATE. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLLINGTON, March 5. To-day was the first day of the real contests of th<3 Trantham meeting as it was now that the championship contests began. The contest had added interest, for the pick of New Sou{h Wales were to compete, and although the men had seen them shoot yesterday they were anxious to see what they wouli do now. At a quarter to eight the opening shot was fired, the match set down was the Nelson Match, ten shots at 500 an d 800 yards. The weather was all that could be desired, a soft light and light steady breeze, and as a result the scoring was high. Seventy-five targets were used for the first time in the history of New, Zealand shouting and gre&tly i facilitated work. Just after starting a change came over, and tricky Trentham commenced to justify its name for fishtails and changing light were the order of the day, and those who went down in it had a streak of bad luck. Again it changed to ideal weather, and then there was a slight shower and more wind. The quality of the men was shown by the excellent scoring, the Australians did nothing startling in the morning. The best scores at 500 yards were —McLeay and Grover possible*, G. Loveday and Williams (Ohura), Frank, Fisher, Tingey, Motton (Australia), Matssen, (Eden), L. Lovec'ay, Marenzie and Forritt (Australia) 49. At the 800 yards, which was being fired simultaneously, possibles were put on by Reynolds, Masefkld, Franklin, Frank and Duthie (Bruce). Of these Frank and Masefield were two who had good scores at the other range. Hunt, Hawthorne and Erson (Auckland), 49. NELSON MATCH, 500 Yards and 800 Yards; Ten Shots at each.

The 500 yards of the Wellington Match was fired concurrently with the 800 yards of the Otago Match. Despite adverse conditions shotting was at times brilliant. Possibles were made by L. Loveday, Ohura; Green, Westport; and J. Guy, Rahotu. Among the next highest were King (Opaki), Morty, Rolleston, Baker, Given, Jarvis, Stedman, Tessimond (Australia) and Eyes, 49; Childs, Major, Mac Knight (Victoria), Ongaley, Roots, York, King (Christchurch), Whale, 48; Captain MacKnight 47.
