A DANGEROUS CHARACTER,

HASTINGS, February 19.
A youth named Alfred Martbus, alleged to be a stowaway from Liverpool, was arrested last night for forgery and obtaining clothing by false pretences. On his person was found a fully-loaded revolver, a diamond glaas cutter, other gear and jewellery, the proceeds, it isjsupposed, of a robbery at Dannevirke. He was remanded till Monday.
FATAL ACCIDENT
HOKITIKA, February 19,
George Gerek, a single man, about sixty years of age, was" killed on Thursday on the main South Westland Road, below Cook's River, through the horse he was riding bolting and going oyer a steep sidinsr. Both rider and horse were killed. Deceased was a highly-respected resident of South Westland for many years.
OIL AT GISBORNE. GISBORNE, Fberuary 19. At the Gisborne Oil Company's meeting, the manager reported that he had successfully raised 1,300 ft of sin piping and replaced it with 6in. The heavy strain in lifting bad caused the pipe to break three times. The company proposes to push to a depth ot 2,000 ft with the present bore.
Another English company has applied for boring rights, but the directors declined to give an option, though they were disposed to give outside capitalists a small area to operate on.
MILITARY TRAINING.
HASTINGS, February 19.
The Hastings Democratic League resolved that the scheme of compulsory military training is too elaborate and costly, and that it is an unsatisfactory substitute for the volunteers, and the league regrets that the Act was passed before the wishes of the people were ascertained.
MOTOR-CYCLE RELIABILITY
TRIAL,
PAHIATUA, Feruary 19,
In the motor-cycle reliability trial between Wellington and Pahiatua, there were twenty-nine competitors. J. C. Bidwill, of Featberston, put up the fastest time. The run was accomplished in three and a half hours. The competitors left on the return journey to Wellington this, morning. SUICIDE OF A DOCTOR.
AUCKLAND, February 19,
A telegram from Ohura reports that Dr Rowland, the, resident medico, was found dead last night, with the top of his head blown off. A gun containing a discharged cartridge was lying across the body. OFF AT LAST. WESTPORT, February 19. The Norwegian barque Odd sailed from the roadstead this morning fdr the Caroline Islands. She arrived here on 26th December from Matupi. Theqrew refused duty, complaining of the diet. Atter inquiry, the Norwegian Consul decided that the men must go home in the ship. The mates and seamen still refused to work. Prosecutions in the Magistrate's Court followed, and the whole of the crew were got rid of. A new crew was obtained from Sydney, but finding there was trouble aboard they refused to turn to. Finally the Sydney mate and some of the men agreed to go to sea with four men short. The Odd was towed into the roadstead, and two additional men joined her. There the captain proposed sailing shorthanded and dividing the ' wages of the missing men among the others. The crew, however, refused 3 to lift anchor, until the number was , strengthened.
This morning two more men were shipped, bringing the crew up to one of the full manning scale. There was again a refusal to sail unless a lad's and a man's wages were increased by ten shillings a month. This was granted, and the Odd got under sail at 11 a.m. She had been in the roadstead seven dayß.
