AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
.<•' alegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 6. j.ne Wellington Provincial Amateur Athletic Championships were held on Saturday, and produced some remarkable performances. Woodger won the hundred yards in lOsfics dead, and the 220 yds in 22sec 2-ssec less than the New Zealand record time. W<odgei's performance will in all probability be submitted, to the Council to be passed as a new record, The 440 yards was won by J. Wilton in 52 seconds. Wilton is the pret sent New Zealand champion. J. P. Wilson, a new runner, was the only man out in the half mile. He was paced by two men who took a lap each and cut out the distance ;n 1 min 58 4-ssecs, only 3-ssec off New Zealand record time. T, B. Heffer, who has been running only a few weeks, and who has been rowing all the season, ran away with the mile in 4min 29 4-ssec. The three miles event went to H. T. Thompson, the holder of the Australasian record over the Marathon distance, in 15min 53 3-ssec. A. Evenseh won the two hurdles events, G. St. V. ICeddell. Eyensen covered 120 yds in 16 2-ssec, and the 440 yds in 63 3-ssec. The mile walk resulted in a great surprise, the New Zealand champion, P. J. Fitzgerald, being badly defeated by the hitherto almost unknown man, D. Cashman, in the remarkable time of 6min 38 4-ssec. The veteran Leslie turned out and walked beautifully, but the going was too solid for him.
In a three mile handicap Fitzgerald was hopelessly out of it, and retired, Cashman winning easily. Evensen won the high jump at sft s Jin, and F. C. Hubbard the long jump at 20ft 2in, * G. P. Anderson's winning throw in the hammer event was 100 feet. There was over three thousand spectators, including the Governor and Lady Plunket. The sum of £l4O was taken at the gates, enabling the Wellington Centre to be strongly represented at Auckland on the 26th inst., at the Neto Zealand Championships.
The feeling is strong here that Wellington will have no great difficulty in wresting the Provincial Premiership Shield from Canterbury, the present holders.
