SCULLING.

By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, January 6. The first heats of the Wanganui first class sculling handicap took place on the Wanganui River this afternoon. The weather was glorious, and the river smooth as glass. Some really good sculling was witnessed, the world's championship races being tame in comparison. This was specially the case in the second heat, when Webb and Green fought the race to a bitter end, Webb winning eventually by a couple of lengths. The following are the results today:— First Heat.—Arnst scr, 1; Felton 13secs, 2; Kemp, 16secs, 3. At the mile Kemp was leading by a length, and Arnst was a couple of lengths in the rear. A quarter mile further on Arnst, who was putting in 26 powertul strokes to the minute, passed Felton,. who immediately afterwards fouled in the willows. Arnst plugged on, and at the mile and a half passed Kemp. He continued to show the way to the finishing post, winning easily by four lengths. Felton, after clearing himself from the willows, livened up; and passed Kemp, the pair making a good fight for second place. Time, 6min 40sec. This is the time take from the first man starting to the gun fire. Second Heat. —Webb 3secs, 1; Dick Green 23secs, 2; Mitchell 13secs, 3. Mitchell ran into the willows about the half mile post, and dropped out of the race. At the mile, which was covered in 6min 35secs, Webb was 2§ lengths behind Green. A great struggle followed, Webb gradually catching the New South Wales sculler and passing him a quarter of a mile from home. Both men struggled gamely, each aparently being ready to drop, Green eventually did stop rowing momentarily, and Webb wun by a couple of lengths. Time, 13 min 24£secs. Third Heat—Hagney lOsecs, 1; Bob Green 15secs, 2; E. Larsen 19secs, 3. Te Rawheti also started.
