A FATAL EXPLOSION.
By Teh graph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 2. In the dying 1 ours of the old year a trajedy ociurred on the high seas, near Wellington. Thesteamar Anglo-Saxon, which had been in Wellington about a week, left for London at 5 p.m. on Friday. When four hours out an explosion occurred in the engine room, ihe evaporator exploded with a report like a cannonjshot. The chief engineer, Francis Lawrence, who was bending over the evaporator, received ■such fearful injuries that he died almost immediately, ihe ve.-sel at once returned to Wellington, whare an inquest was held to- ay. Lawrence was about 3S yard and he leaves a wi.lnw and i'-rnily residing at Sutiderl tnd.
