MIKI MIKI MAIL SERVICE.
A MEETING' OF SETTLERS CONVENED.
A meeting of M"fe-Miki settlers! to consider the mail service in that district will be held on Monday evening next, in the Schoolhouse, at 8 o'clock. The present contract for carrying the mails, which expires at the end of the current month, is worth £IOO per annum. Fresh tenders were recently called by the Postal Department and the present mail contractor tendered at £l5O, and it seems that the Department is not inclined to accept the offer, and a3 a consequence there is a possibility that the daily mail service will be discontinued. The reason for the contractor having increased his price is due, so we are infoimed, to the CRrrying trade of the district having gone back. A prominent settler in the district states that he is of opinion that the mail contract is worth at least £125 per annum. Miki Miki settlers are naturally anxious to retain the daily mail service which they have enjoyed for some considerable time past, and the' object of the meeting is to endeavour to find a means to that end.
