BOATING ACCIDENT.

FOUR PERSONS DROWNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, November 24. A sud boating accident, resulting in the death of four persons, occurred at the mouth of the Rakaia River yesterday afternoon. It appears that Mrs Baxter, Miss Rountree, and Messrs James Baxter, Thomas Hannah arid Harvey Hannah we're rowing in the river, near its mouth, in a punt. Presumably they got too near the mouth of the river, and were swept out to "sea by the stream, and the boat upset. The only one of the party saved was Baxter, andheisina very precarious state. Till a late hour last evening he had not recovered conciousncss. The only witnasses of the accident were two brothers, named Carries. Four of the victims were wellknown residents of Southbridge, Rountree had gone there on Saturday to spend a holiday.
