SHOCKING ACCIDENT.
TO A RAILWAY PORTER. By Telegraph—Press Association. ASHBURTON, October 29. Another shocking railway accident occurred this afternoon, when, during shunting operations at Hinds, a young porter, named John Richards, aged about 19 or 20, caught his foot in a block and feil across the rails inl front of the engine. The locomotive passed right over him, frightfully crushing his thigh, and almost severing his leg, as well as mutilating both his hands and breaking his left arm. The victim, who retained conscuiunaesg till chloroform and morphia were injected, was brought into the Ashburton Hospital in a critica sta'e, and the doctet* holda out no hope of hn ultimate recovery. Richards had l.esn at Hinds only a few months, having been transferred there from Piangiora.
