A SERIES OF CHARGES.

By Telegraph—Press Association, PALMERSTON N., October 18.

At the Police Court, at Palmerston North, to-day, before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., Claude Retter and Charles Cannon, alias Cripps, alias Watson were charged with being idle and disorderly persons.

Retter swore he owned a trotting hjrse and had £4O in the Post Office Savings Bank.

The case was adjourned for a short time to allow enquiries to be made. It was found that the statement was false and Retter was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. An information was then laid against him for perjury, and he was remanded till Monday next. Cannon was also convicted, and sentencad to three months.

On a charge of theft preferred against him for stealing clothing and goods to the value of *7 from the residence of George Ransiord,. of Palmerston North, they were also remanded till Monday. Ectie White, a woman who had been residing with Retter and Cannon, was charged with vagrancy, and remanded till the. same date The evidence showed that Cannon especially had been consorting with thieves and ha'i served five years for assault and robbery and several othsr convictions.
