DALEFIELD COW-TESTING ASSOCIATION.
THE FIRST M )NTH*3 TEST. COWS THAT PAY. From Mr D. Cuddie, Director of Dairy Produce, we are in receipt of the particulars of the first month's test in connection with the Cowtesting Association, which has recently been started in the Wairarapa district. The work has been carried out by Mr W. H. Singleton, Assistant Director of thd Dairy Produce Division, Instructor Gwillim having tested the samples numbering 569 a 1 the Dalefield factory. The figures should prove very in teresting to did owners of these herds, and also to those who have not as yet undertaken this work. Some 26 herds are represented. The yield of each cow has been calculated for the full period—whether the cow has been milking all that period or not —for the sake of making comparisons more apparent, accurate and instructive. The average cow of the herd producing the highest record for fat, topped the list at 38.831b5, and at an average test of 3.41 per cent. The lowest yield was from a herd which averaged !S.63lbs of fat p?r cow tor the same period—a difference of over 131bs of fat p?r caw. Valuing fat a la per lb, this makes a difference of 13s per cow for the month of September. On a herd of thirty cows this would amount tD £l9 10s. The cow giving'the hignest yield for the month produced "56.381bs of fat. The lowest producer gave 11.521bs of fat for the same time. The respective values at Is per lb for fat would be £2 16s 4cl, and lis 6d, or it would take about five cows of the stamp of the smaller producer to yield as much fat as one cow equal to the best. The average cow of the Association gave about 9401bs of milk, testing 3.5 per cent., and yielding 32.901bs of fat. This certainly indicates that there are mar.v good cows included in the number tested.
