The northern lights were seen in St. Petersburg, and in France and Italy. There were no auroral m anifestations in Britain. The submarine cables did not suffer, though the connecting land wires were disturbed. Many outbreaks of fire in the telegraph offices of Scandinavia and northern uermany have been reported, due to the burning of the coverings of the wires.
VICTORIAN WIRES AFFECTED. Received September 28. 9.50 a.m. MELBOURNE, September 28. Saturday's magnetic disturbance caused consiJerable trouble on the telegraph lines, and also to soma extent affected the cable service, In the messages from Cocos Islands the strokes which are usually horizontal were given a peculiar undulating appearance. The Government Astronomer states that the storm was the most severe in his experience. In the last twen-ty-four hours the oscillations recorded on the instrument went over the side of the recording paper.
