Massey, Leader of the Opposition, speaking at a Eocial tendered to Mr Lang, M.P., said the finances of the country were in a more unsatisfactory position than they had been for many years past/ They wanted legislation which, while doing no injnstice to the natives, would open up the lands for European settlement. New Zealand was not going forward. It was going back. The land question was one of the first that should be tackled. They wanted a policy of reform and progress.
