In the match yesterday for the sculling championship of Australia, Pearce b.?at Day by half a length. Pearce had the beat of the start and was never overhauled though Day, who rowed a splendid, plucky race, kept him moving, and several times got on close terms. He passed the champion during the last half mile. The finish was exciting. One hundred yards from home Pearc3 wa3 leading by about three lengths. Suddenly he momentarily stopped, owing to something going wrong with his left arm. Day was almost level before Pearce again got going, and Pearce won by half a length. Time 26min lsec.
