Mr Frank Roype, of Masterton, who has been on an extended trip to England, returned home on. Thursday .'last. ________ .Mr Robert Hughes. V.D., of Wanganui, who is in charge of the New Zealand rifle team that left yesterday for Sydney, has been promoted to the rank of Lieut.-Colonel. The Hon. T. K. Macdonald, who has been on a trip to Great Britain and the Continent, arrived in Sydney by the India on Thursday last. He expects to reach Wellington next Wednesday'. Mr F. W. Carey, manager of the Masterton branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., whose health has Jbeen somewhat indifferent of late, will leave Masterton on Monday next, on two months' sick leave. Dr McCarthy, who, twenty years ago, practised his profession m Hokitika, died suddenly other day, at Colaienebri, near Sydney, where he held the position of medical officer to the hospital. In Hokitika, states the "West Coast Times," Dr : McCarthy was noted for his musical - proclivities. At Wellington, on Wednesday last, Mr William Herbert Wenden, eldest son'of Mr B Wenden, of Greytown, was married to Miss Katherine O'Callaghan, third daughter of Mr J. O'Callaghan, of Morison's Bush. Miss L. Wenden, sister of the bride • groom was bridesmaid, and Mr L. Mace best man. Th.p Acting-Prime Minister, Hon. J. Carroll, and the Hons. J. A. Millar . ad G. Fowlds, have returned to Wellington from the Rangitikei electorate. The Hon. T. Mackenzie ■ will remain at Levin until Monday, and the Hon. JR. McKenzie is in the Stratford district. The Hon D. Buddo is expected to return from the South on Sunday. The election of representatives of the diocese Waiapu on the General Synod was held on Thursday, and resulted as follows:—Clergy (nine nominations): Ven. Archdeacon Williams, Ven. Archdeacon Ruddock and Rev. J. Hobbs. Laymen (five nominations): Messrs J. B. Fielder, J. H. • Smith, J. N. Williams and T. Tanner. The death occurred on Thursday last; at ftatorua. of Mr Duncan Caraiichael, who w_d for several years owner of Glengarrie Stat!6n',' on' the Napier-Taupo road. This/ property Mr Carmichael disposed of to ' Mr Beard last year, chiefly owing to failing health, and he has been residing at Rotorua for some time in the hope of being restored to good health. The late Mr Carmichael leaves a widow and a grown-up family.. iAfter thirty-five years' faithful service the postmistress at Ohariu (Mrs Bessett) found that the daily ■ mail service recently instituted entailed many extra duties upon her, and she therefore resigned her position. Her daughter (Miss F. Bas • 88tt), who has held the office of telephonist for eighteen years, has also resigned. The residents of Ohariu, aa a mark of appreciation of services well rendered, entertained Mrs and Miss Bassett ( at a "social," and made a presentation of a solid silver tea service bearing a suitable inscription, and a silver mounted cake tray.
