WESTPORT COLLIERY.
1 1 By —Press Association. l.yj 200 men at the local colliery, the following information is published: —Mines can only be worked at tlieir full capacity when the demand for differerit sorts is in proportion. At present the demand is chiefly for screened coal. Newcastle coal whe.i screened gives 80 per cent, screened and 20 per cent, small. The company loses heavily by discontinuing the shift at Granity. As the trade improves more hands will be put on immediately, but it is doubtful "if the second shift can be renewed this year. The company sent a man to the East to try and open a market there, and followed this up by consignments oi" coal, but the loss was disastrous, and shipments had to be discontinued.
