NEW ZEALAND LADIES' tournament. By Telegraph—Special to the Age. NAPIER. August 27. The New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Championship was continued ori the Recreation Ground to-day. Results. NELSON (nil) v. HOROWHENUA (nil). Nelson did not show quite the same dash as in former matches, and the game ended in a draw. TARANAKI (3) v. WANGANUI (1). Taranaki. who appear to be improving with each mat2h, had always the better of the play. AUCKLAND (3) v. HAWKE'S BAY B (nil). Auckland kept up a strong attack all through the game, and won by 3 to nil. WAIRARAPA A (2) v. WELLING-
TON (nil). This was the best game of the day. At the start both sides put in some good work, Miss E, Bicknell, the Wairarapa left wing, being specially brilliant at times, and on one
occasion came very near scoring. The first spell ended without a score to either side. In the second spell Wairarapa made the pace brisk, and kept Wellington very busy defending. After some close play in the Wellington circle Miss J. Bicknell found the net. and registered the first goal for Wairarapa. The Wairarapa forwards maintained thier attack strongly, never being far away from the Wellington territory, and eventually Miss E Bicknell by clever play added a second goal to the score Wellington then rallied, and for a time looked dangerous, but the whistle blew without them having been able to penetrate the Wairarapa defence, and Wairarapa thus won by 2 goals to nil.
HAWKE'S BAY A (4) v. WAIRARAPA B (1) = Anticipating an easy win, Hawke's Bay opened the ?atiie in a somewhat slack manner, but the little Wairarapa girla soon showed that they were not to be despia'ed. At the start they carried play to Hawki'S Bay quarters, and for a time assume i the aggressive. They were making trra;it efforts to score, but the defence vvas good, and they ware kej)t at bay. After a loose forward rush by Hawke's Bay. Miss M. Niven shot a goal for Hawke's Bay. Wairarapa replied by again invniing Hawke's Bay territory, but a shot at goal Went over the line. Hawke's Bay iivened up and shifted play to Wairarapa's iwei;tj-fiV-', _but another
smart rush bv Wairarapa again carried play to the Haw ke'e Bay circle, where a score was narrowly averted. Hawke's Bay was almost continually attacking for the remainder of the first spell without adding: to their score. Early in the second spell Wairarapa were pressing, and from some good individual play the Wairarapa captain (Miss Dalrymnle) shot a goal for Wairarapa. This was just the stimulus that Hawke's Bay required. They retaliated in grand style, and play became fast and exciting. Rush followed rush in auisk Hawke's Bay, however, generally holding the balance of po">er, and their back division were playing much better. Two goals by Miss Crowley and one by Miss Well wood were added to Hawke's Bay's score before the game ended. The game was a,good one all through, and the Wairarapa team was complimented on all sides on their performance.
