GOLF.

NEW ZEALAND LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP.

By Telegraph—Press Association.

PALMERSTON N., August 23,

The weather was again delightful for the Golf Championships, and as on the pervious days further surprises were effected in the championships. The fourth heat has eliminated the last of those who have held New Zealand championships, and left the semi final to previously untried golfing talent. Mrs Bidwill, Miss Rattray, Mrs Williams, Miss Stephenson (all ex-champions), and Miss Christie (the present champion) are all now spectators. Perhaps the greatest surprise of all was Miss Stephenson's defeat, because she had been playing such solid golf all the way through. The quality of the play may be judged from the fact that Miss Brandon, the young Wellington player, who defeated her, put in a very hot round, and then went out and equalled the record of the links. At the outset of the tournament the ladies' links record was 92. Since then Mrs Williams has twice done it in 89, and Mrs Bevan and Miss Brandon did it to-day. Miss Stephenson on Saturday did 92 after losing 3 strokes, in a hollow log.

The Coronation Medal went to MiBS Brewster, of New Plymouth. She vnuld also have taken the Donnelly Cup on the same score, but while others of the Taranaki contingent were entered for it Miss Brewster was not. She' was not thought to have a chance, so the cup went to Miss N. Gurrie as the next best scorer.

The Driving was won by Miss Hamlin, of Napier. Miss B. Hindmarsh, of Napier, was second and Miss Campbell third.

The semi-finals and final of the championship are to be played tomorrow. Mrs Bevan and Mis*? Humphreys and Miss Brandon and Miss Cowper meet in the former.

Keen interest was taken in the North v. South Island match between teams selected by Misa Rattray, of Dunedin, and Miss Duncan, of Wellington, respectively. It resulted in a decisive victory for the North Island by 568 to 553, the scores being :—North Island, Miss Miss L. Brandon 89, Miss Stephenson 92, Mrs G. Williams 94, Mrs Bevan 96, Mrs Bidwill 97, Miss Hannay 100. South Island.—Miss Rattray 93,' Miss Milll 98, Miss Christie 98, Miss Snodgrass 99, Miss Gould 100, Miss Ward 105.
