NUCLEUS OF A NAVY.

In connection with the Defence Conference, it is stated that Canada, like the other Dominions, a local section of the Imperial General Staff. The organisation will enable Canada to co-operate with the rest of the Empire. Steps were taken to initiate the staff after the mission of Sir F. Borden, Canadian Minister of Militia, to England in 1908. The nucleus of a Canadian Navy will be commenced immediately, with an eye to the Pacific as well as the Atlantic. Dock facilities will also be increased.

Tha '"Standard," commenting on the results of the Imperial Defence Conference, as far as they are known, remarks that one vital point is that a programme will be concerted in which due attention will be paid both to local requirements and to wider interests. "That concerted action," says the paper, "is the keyhole of the whole scheme, and very much will depend on haimonious co-operation. There has been increasing readiness in the United Kingdom to examine the defence question from the standpoint of the Dominions as well as oura. imperial unity should be based on local, equally with Imperial sentiment." THE WORK OF THE CONFERENCE.

Received August 20, 12.50 a.m. LONDON, August 19. ) No official information in regard to the Imperial Defence Conference will be forthcoming until the oversea delegates return to their respective Dominions and explain the situation fully to their own people and legislatures. "The limes" says that it will not be until Sir Joseph Ward is once more in New Zealand that the conclusions of this historic and possibly one 6f the most momentous Imperial gatherings will be officially revealed.
