liy Telegraph—Press Association. PALMERSTON N. t August 12. Mr S. Messina, of Foxton, to-day, cabled to Mr Coombes of the "Sydney Reieree,"withdrawing the stake, deposited for the sculling match between Whelch and Day on the Manawatu, as it was not covered in time. Mr Messina, in conjunction with another Foxton sportsman, has decided instead to inaugurate an annual international sculling handicap on theLo-g Reach on the Manawatu river, three'and a-half miles above Foxton. They will put up £2OO in stakes, to which will be added twenty per cent, of the gate money. This gate money is not to exceed two shillngs and sixpence per head, and the arrangements made with vehicle proprietors is) that the ft re out to the scene of the race to which there is a good road shall not exceed two shillings and sixpence. The course which is to be visited by Arnst on the 19th inst. is a stretch of straight dead water with level banks four feet high/permitting of an uninterrupted view. The proposal is to hold the event in the first week in December if the tides suit that week, perliminary heats to be \rowed on Wednesday, semi-finals and finals on Friday, and other sports occupying Thursday. It is understood that Dick' Arnst and probably also his brother, fcogwell, Pearce, Whelch, Day, and it is hoped Webb, and in fict all the prominent scullers will.be taking part.
