The Australian cricketres began a return match against Yorkshire, at Sheffield, to day, in dull weather. The wicket was gund. Sixteen thousand spectators were present. The teams were composed as follow Australia: Carter, Trumper, Noble, Gregory, Armstrong, Bardsley, Macartney, Laver, Ransford, Cotter, and Whitty.
Yorkshire: Wilson, Denton, Wilkinson, Hirst, Rhodes, Hardisty, Kcthery, Broadbent. Newstead, Haicrh, and Hunter. Hunter won the toss, and Rhodes and Wilson opened for the county. Wilson succumbed in the fourth over. One for 7. Denton joined Rhodes. Both batsmen, with stylish and lively play, punished Cotter, and knocked up 46. At 35 Laver displaced Cotter. | The change had a quieting effect on the batsmen. At 76 Cutter was tried again, and off his first ball Denton was grandly taken by Ransford, running from third man to deep point. Denton hit five fourers. Cotter found Wilkinson's stumps in his second over. Three for 83. At the luncheon adjournment the score was three for 126—Rhodes 48, Hirst 21. The century took 100 minutes to compile. Eleven bowling changes had been tried. On resuming, Hirst added 8 before Cotter bagged him. Four for 143. Rhodes was still playing an excellent, chanceless innings. Rhodes, on reaching 75, completed his 1,000 runs foJ the season. Hardisty joined Rhodes. The newcomer commenced shakily, and Rhodes was troubled by bowling changes. At the tea adjournment the partnership had been in operation 90 minutes, and the score was 234—Rhodes iOB, Hardisty 32. In the first over after resuming Rhodes gave an easy catch to Gregory at cover point. He had showed strong defence and skilful and stylish cricket throughout his stay of 205 minutes, without giving a single chance, and had hit eight fourers. Five for 234. Another long partnership of 65 minutes followed between Hardisty and Rothery. The third centruy was hoisted after 270 minutes' play, A separation was at length effected; Gregory, with a smart return from cover point, knocked down Hardisty's wicket. The retiring batsman gave a chance to Cotter off his own bowling when he had made 25, and another difficult one at 70 in long field, Bardsley falling with the ball in his hands. He had batted 155 minutes. After a poor start he played vigorously, and hit eight fours. Six for 311. Rothery went in the next over without addition to the score. The eighth wicket fell for 321, and the ninth was down for 337, when stumps were drawn for the day. Scores : YORKSHIRE. i First Inninis.
