TUG and barquentine in TROUBLE. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 5 The steamer Awaroa, which left Kaipara- for Auckland, towing the brigantine Defiance, encountered a gale of hurricane force on Friday morning. She was helpless, rolling in the trough of the &ea, and both vessels were being driven ashore. Therefore the hawser had to be slipped, leaving the Defiance tocher own resources. After sheltering at Motupia, the Awaroa reached Auckland, yesterday. The Defiance had a uood spread of canvas, and was well provisioned. It was expected that she would get clear of the danger safely.
