COLLISION AT SEA.
WHAKATANE BADLY DAMAGED. BEACHED AT DOVER. United Press Association—By Elcotrio Telegraph Copyright. Received July 5, 11.30 p.m. LONDON, July 5. The French cargo steamer Circe struck the steamer Whakatane, bound for Auckland, amidships, during a fog off Dungeness (a headland on the south coast of Kent, flooding the engine room. The Whakatane commenced to settle dowD, but was kept afloat with the assistance of tugs. Meanwhile the Circe brought the Whakatane's passengers to Dover. These,with the mails, and valuable stud horses, will be transferred to another of the Bame Company's liners. The Whakatane was towed tar Dover, and beached on arriving. She appeared badly down by the stern. Tne whole crew was mustered in the forepart. All the damage was below the water line.
