CARTERTON NEWS.

Prom Our Resident Reporter. Wednesday. A hockey match between the Hincmoa and St. John's (Petone) ladies' clubs is to be played here to-morrow. Messrs J. T. M» Hornsby and W. J.jLindop, J.'sP.j presided at a sitting n£ the Police Sdurt to-day, when a man named HbwsQh, arrested at Pahiatua on a charge of false pretences, was remanded for a week, the police stating that other charges were pending against accused. To-morrow a team of Boy Scouts from the first Carterton troop are to take part in a despatch race from Masterton to Carterton. One boy is to travel to Masterton by the 11.30 train and receive an envelope stamped by the Masterton Post Office at two o'clock. The remainder of the team, under Assistant Scoutmaster A. S. Judd, are to proceed per bicycle towards Maßterton, boys being stationed at one mile from point to pnint. At a given time the boy at Masterton is to commence to run to Carterton. Having run his mile he will mount the bicycle and ride on to Carterton. Every boy having run his mile, will cycle the rest of the distance home.

Mr A. S. Judd, cycle importer, has issued a very handy railway timetable guide for Carterton, a copy of which I acknowledge with thanks.

In St. Mary's Church this afternoon, the marriage of Miss Ellen Chapman, eldest daughter of Mr R. J. Chapman, to Mr Henry Gardner, was solemnised by the Rev. Father Bowe. The bride's parents held a reception at Victoria Hall in the evening.

The Band of Hope opened their session in the schoolroom last evening, the attendance being very satisfactory. The Rev. W. J. Elliott presided. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Rev. W. J. Elliott; vice-presidents, Messrs D. T. King and G. Butler; secretary, Mr W. Stevens; treasurer, Mr P. Andrews; assistant organist. Miss E. Butler; Committee, Misses Butler, King, Fensham, Zillwood, Krahagen, Mansfield (2), Martin, Messrs . T. W. Foster, H. Andrews, and officers ex officio. It was resolved to meet fortnightly, and a committee was appointed to prepare a programme for the next meeting.
