"THE YELLOW PERIL."
[RAID ON CHINESE SHOPS. LARRIKINS TAKE CHARGE. Something in the nature of a riot 5 occurred in Blenheim on a recent Saturday .right. About a week pra- ■ a new European fruiterer commenced business, whereupon the syndicate which controls the two shops run by Chinese installed an- . other Celestial a little farther down tbe street. On the Saturday evening a large number of youths and boys took up a position outside the premises of the new Chinese, and commenced to harass him. They com- ' ihenced by scribbling the words "Lionel Terry" and "Yellow Peril" on*the window. Everybody who entered the shop was hooted, and asked, "Why don't you patronise the white man?" The larrikins then made their way into the shop, and commenced pelting the occupier with his own fruit and other fruit which they had purchased from another Chinese. The shopkeeper retreated into a back 'rooiii, and the invaders, after wreaking their vengeance on his goods, turned out the gas ami shut the door. When the Chinese came to open it he was greeted with another fruit, and compelled to beat a retreat again. All tshis time there was not a policeman in sight, but eventually Constable Dunphy put in an appearance, and inquired of the Celestial what had occurred. Upon the con- '" stable emerging from the shop the crowd" dispersed, but after he had gone they reassembled, and a crash signified that the plate glass window of the shop had been smashed.
