MILITARY GOVERNMENT.

Who are against the principle that every man should be trained to arms, so that in time of trouble he may be able to do his duty? Obviously, only those who are persuaded that trouble can never come, or those who do not think the country should be defended, if trouble doss come. It is quite possible that some of these opponents of compulsory training might require for their conversion the actual occupation of the Dominion by foreign hosts or alien" hordes. But for the average citizen it is sufficient to know that, in the opinion of those best able to judge, certain [national dangers exist. The Auckland "Herald" in an article on military training says that it is futile to regret lack of precautions and preparations when cities flame and national independence is struck down, nor will it be possible, in the face of the enemy, to institute even the mildest system of universal and compulsory defensive training.
