TOUR OP THE AUSTRALIANS. MATCH AGAINST NORTHAMPTON. Receievd May 12, 9.0 a.m. LONDON, May 11. Tho first innings of the Australians in the match against JNorthamptonshire closed for 319, Armstrong being top.scorer with 79. Bardsley scored 76. Hartigan and Bardsley opened the batting for the Australians. The former, when he had made 14, lost his wicket in attempting to play back to a ball from Smith. [His score included three 4's, obtained off the first over he received. The first wicket fell at 67, and the second at 101. Noble's innings fasted seventy minutes, and his 32 runs were mostly the result of late cuts. Smith disposeJ of O'Connor and Carter with successive balls, the latter succumbing to his first delivery. The fourth wicket fell at 122. Bardsley played free and faultless cricket, and was especially strong in his leg-side work. On resuming play this morning, the wicket was fast and the weather glorious. There was a fair attendance.
Bardsley retired after adding a single to his overnight scora. He gave a chance to Kingston at slip in the same over. During his stay of one hundred minutes at the wickets he made nine fourers, and his legside play was splendid. Cotter indulged in his usual free game. Northamptonshire's tof.al was passed in 150 minute 3' play. Trumper's innings lasted ninety minutes, his half century appearing at the end of eighty minutes. He played sound free cricket, his score including eight fourers. He fell in trying to pull Thompson at mid-on. Armstrong's innings showed free all-round play. He made 50 in fiftynine minutes, during two hours at the'ereases, and gave no chance. His score included eleven fourers.
