THE BUDGET PROPOSALS. DUTY ON FOREIGN BEERS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright. Received May 12, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, May 12. The duty on foreign beers has been fixed at a shilling- per thirty-six gallons. A LONG TECHNICAL DISCUSSION. TAX ON CLUB LIQUOR. Received May 12, 11.30 p.m. LONDON, May 12. 'lhere was a long Technical discussion in the House of Commons on the duty on foreign beer, club licenses and lat'd values duties. Mr Prettyman enumerated eight heavy taxes borne by land, and it was an injustice adding four more when the incomes derivable from land were falling The real burden fell, not on the great landowners, but on the owners of small properties who did not possess other resources. The Hon. Mr Lloyd-George accepted a Unionist suggestion that the tax on liquor sold by clubs be altered from threepence in the pound on the liquor sold to sixpence in th*> pound upon the liquor purchased. Mr A. B. Markham (Liberal M.P. for Mansfield) accused Ihe GoVcrnraen of preventing the House of Commons raising the poundage owing to the fear of the enormous political influence of the clubs. Several members advocated a poundage equal to the licenses of public houses.
