Hotel proprietors are protesting against the enormous charges imposed by Mr Lloyd-George's Budget. They urge the taxation of drinks at 41d in the pound. A similar method is proposed for clubs, at 3d in the pound. Mr Lloyd-George, in an interview with a representative of the "Daily Mail," said the calculations in regard to licenses had been greatly exaggerated. He did not desire to strangle respectable hotels. He urges the public to await the details of his Finance Bill.

AN ANIMATED DISCUSSION. Received May 11, 11.52 p.m. LONDON, May 11. The House of Commons discussed a liquor resolution covering forty excise duties. An animated discussion took place on the lines of public criticism. The Opposition warmly resented the Government's attempts to apply the'closure to the debate. "The Times" states that the Budget is undergoing considerable modification as the result of criticism.
