THE MAYOR'S NOTICE OF MOTION.

NOT ENTERTAINED BY THE COUNCIL. At the Borough Council meeting last evening, the Mayor moved, in accordance with notice given, "Th at the Borough Engineer be instructed to, prepare an estimate of the approxftnite cost of completely kerbing, channeling, tnl macadamising the whole of the central and arterial roads of the Borough, with the view of placing before the ratepayers a loan proposal to enable sucn works to be carried out." In speaking to the motion, the Mayor j said that although the matter was an important one, his motion simply meant the obtaining from the Engineer of a m & whether the scheme tym' advisable. W hen . tjis ivporfc was received the Council could discuss the matter, as it was impossible to make a move in the matter until J t was received. His Worship referred, to the impossibility of constructing new works out of revenue, as it would only entail a heavier burden of rates on the ratepayers. If the motion were carried they would then have a definite scheme to deal with.

The motion was seconded by Cr Prentice. Cr Hoar remarked that the proposal only A meant a "lot of work fir nothing." ' The Mayor replied that the information would always be useful. Cr Pragnell, in supporting the scheme, referred to the necessity of executing important road works in the Borough. The motion was then put, and on a division being asked for, it was declared lost. The Mayor stated that it was his desire to see the town progress on solid lines. It was his intention to bring the matter up again at the i next Council meeting.
