Y.M.C.A.
A special meeting of the Board of Management of the Master ton Young Men's Christian Association was held last night, to discuss the financial position. There were present: — Messrs P. L. Rollings (President, -in the cliair), H. T. Wood, A. Hsndry, D. McGregor junr., E. H. Waddington, G. Falla, R. Brown (hon. treasurer), Alex Donald, G. J. Tncker, E. R. Wilson, Dr Prior, Rev. C. Porter, and N. C. Marshall (acting general secretary). Apolo- ! gies for absence were received from Revs. H. Watson, A. T. Thompson, and A. Hodge. The chairman said that the financial position of the Association required very careful consideration. It was unfortunate that the ordinaryrevenue was insufficient to meet the expenditure, but that was the experience of every Y.M.C.A., and what was required was a special source of revenue to make up the deficiency. They had then to face the question, "Was it possible to raise a guarantee fund of £IOO per annum amongst the citizens of Masterton and district to / meet the expenditure?" He did not for a moment believe that the supporters of the Association would refuse to help the Association to meet the needs of the young men of the town. The institution was growing in membership, and popularity, which necessitated an increased expenditure. They were on the point of engaging a first-class General Secretary, and the prospects for future work were good. An animated discussion ensued, during which many references were made to the usefulness of the Association, and the determination to solve the financial difficulty became very evident, as proposal after proposal was brought forward. The chairman moved that the Board of Management commence an active canvass to secure at least one hundred honorary members willing to contribute not less than £1 Is togeneral funds of the'-'Asso-ciation. This was seconded by Mr Falla and carried unanimously. The campaign will commence this week, and the Board will meet on May 24th, to report progress. In the meantime Mr Alfred Snowball, formerly General Secretary of I Middlesborough Association (England), now of Melbourne, was provisionally appointed. An offer from the Association's Physical Instructor (Mr R. O. Jarrett) to arrange a physical culture display in aid of the general funds was received with applause.
