EMPIRE DEFENCE.

PROPOSED CONFERENCE. BRITISH PREMIER COMMENDED. Received May 5, 8.20 a.m. LONDON, May 4. The "Daily Graphic" describes Mr Asquith's announcement in regard to the proposed conference on defence matters as most gratifying. What is needed, says the paper, is a definite understanding between the self-governing colonies and the Motherland regarding tneir respective parts in the common duty of defending the Empire. "The Graphic" adds:-"The Dominions will certainly prefer to spend their own money in their own way, but there is r.o reason why the respective fields of expenditure should not be marked out by argeement, so as to secure the maximum benefit to the Empire as a whole."
