LONDON WOOL SALES.
OPENING OF MAY SERIES. ADVANCE IN PRICES. Received May 5, 11.36 a.m. LONDON, May 4. The May series of wool sales opened to-day. ' A brisic business was done, prices ruling from par to ten per cent, higher than at the close of the March sales. Received May 5, 10.15 p..m LONDON, May 5. At the wool sales 7,892 bales were offered, including 700 crossbreds. There was a large attendance of buyers, including a record number of American?. There was strong general competition. Medium crossbreds were 10 per cent, above the closing rates of the March sales, and fine and coarse crossbred 5 per cent, higher. There was a poor selection of merinos, which were from par to 5 per cent, higher.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., has received the following cablegram from its London house, under yesterday's date:—"Wool sales: There was a full attendance at the opening of the sales to-day. Competition by Home, Continental and American buyers was active, and prices, as compared with the close of preceding series, ruled about 7£ per cent, to JO per cent, higher for crossbred lambs, fine crossbred, and medium crossbred acd about 5 per cent, to 74 per cent, higher for coarse crossbred and crossbred slipe. Very little merino wool was offered. The market is firm, with an upward tendency." Messrs Levin and Co. report on the London wool sales:—Merinos and fine crossbreds opened at an advance on last sales' closing rates of 10 per cent; medium crossbreds opened at an advance of 7A. per cent., and crossbreds at an advance of 5 per cent - . Continental and American buyers are operating freely.
