SHOCKING OUTRAGE.

WOMAN BRUTALLY ROBBED. SENSATION ON> STEAMER.§ By Telegraph—Press Association. * WELLINGTON, April 23. A shocking outrage took place about 2.30 o'clock, this afternoon, aboard the steamer Moeraki, which arrived this morning from the South en route for Sydney. Miss Orr, of Oanraru, who intended proceeding with some friends to Sydney, having come from Lyttelton by the Moeraki, was reclining in her cabin, when a man entered and shut the door' and quickly graiped Miss Orr by the throat, using considerable violence. He demanded her purse, the terrified woman handed over her purse containing between £4 and £5. The man then forced her back] on a aeetee and severely punched her fac till she became almost insensible. Then the brutal robber succeeded in making his escape, and no trace of him has yet been found. The police and detectives were summoned, and are busily investigating the circumstances, and making a search. Under medical instructions, Miss Oir had to abandon making the voyage to Sydney, it being advisable that she should stay in Wellington for the present. She will probably return to Oamaru as soon as she is well enough. Medical examination shows that Miss Orr's throat is severely lacerated: Her face is horribly swollen, and sh? is suffering very much from shock.
