ROXBURGH-LAWRENCE LINE.

~ GOVERNMENT'S DECISION " UNALTERABLE. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, April 15. Sir Joseph Ward, in a communication to the Dunedin "Star," says the decision to stop the Roxburgh-Law-rence line, pending Parliament reviewing the position, is unalterable. The Otago Central railway last year resulted in the abnormally low result of six shillings per cent, a deficiency, on a 3 per cent, basis, of £34,558, and it was estimated that the Roxburgh line would prove nearly as disastrous. The suggestion that Southland influence had been responsible for the Government's action was baseless, and without warrant, while the wretched suggestion that it was done to punish the district because it was staunch Oppositionist was almost too contemptible to be considered in a matter of such vital import.
