PREVALENCE OF FIRES.
SOMETHING WRONG. VIEWS OF MR HUGO. By Telegraph—Press Assoication. AUCKLAND, March 9. Speaking at the Fire Brigades' Conference, Mr Hugo. Government Fire Inspector, referred to the extraordinary prevalence of fires in New Zealand. In Wellington, with a population of 60,000, there were 139 fires in the twelve months ended March last. According to Old World statistics, a citj of 300,000 people would have no more while in a European town of ',OOO under 23 fires would be expec-d. There was something wrong. He attributed the excess of fires in the Dominion not so much to incendiarism as to carelessness engendered by the knowledge that fires would not mean a loss. He strjngly commented upon over-insur-ance.
