LONDON MARKETS.
H.GH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, March 6th, 1909: — The mutton market is weak. Stocks on hand are heavy and are widely distributed amongst agents, who are pushing sales. There are large shipments coming forward, and prospects are unfavourable, as buyers are not inclined to make forward purchases at present prices. The following are the current quotations: —Canterbury, 3|d; North Island, 3d; River Plate, 2§d; Australian, 2£d per lb. The larnb market is weak. Stock is heavy, and there is a dull sale for all brands. Current quotations are: —Canterbury, s&d; other than Canterbury. 4£d; Australian, 4d per lb. The beef market is steady, and there is a better demand. Hindquarters are quoted at 2§d and forequarters at 3£d per lb. The butter market is quiet but steady. There is an increasing demand for better grades, but less demand for second-class quality. Choicest New Zealand butter is quoted at 106s; Danish, 115s; Australian, 103s; Argentine, 105s; and Siberian, 102s per cwt. The cheese market is firm, with an improved demand. Coloured makes, of which demand exceeds supply, are quoted at 645, and white makes at 60s per cwt. The hemp market is quiet with small business doing. Holders are more willing to sell. Current quotations are: —On spot: Good fair grade, £23 10s; fair grade, £22; fair current Manila, £23. AprilJune shipments: fair grade, £23 ss; fair grade, £2l 15s; fair current Manila, £22 ss. Stacks held in London amounts to 204 tons. Last week's Manila output was 25,000 bales. There has been no alteration in the cocksfoot seed market since last week.
The wool market is firm, with more enquiry, especially for fine quality.
