STEAMER REPORTED TO BE ASHORE.
MARAROA SENT TO RENDER ASSISTANCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, February 14. It is reported that a large steamer, whose name at present is unknown, is ashore or broken down off the mouth of the Hurunui River. Immediately <n her arrival from Welli gion. this morning, the U, ion Company's Mararoa was sent up the coast to render assistance. No further details are St pres. Nt available here. "NOT UNDER CONTROL." WELLINGTOF, February 14. The Waikare, on arrival from the South to-day, reported that at 4.3 a.m. a vess 1 was passed 39 miles north of Lyttelton Heads, signalling, "Not under control. The signals were answered, but as no request was made for assistance the Waikare came on. It was a Union Company boat, but her identity was not ascertained. The weather at the time was fine, with a slight wind. The Arapawa arrived here at 4 o'clock, this afternoon, and reported having seen no sign of any other vessel. KINA RUNS ASHORE. BUT IS TOWED OFF. A telephone message from Wellington last evening stated that the Monowai had ruu ashore at the Hurunui river- A further telephone message from Wellington this morning conveyed the information that it. was the coastal steamer Kina that had gone ashore and not the Monowai. The Kina was towed off bv the I Maiaroa and taken to Lyttelton. No further particulars were available. •
