THAMES BY-ELECTION.

By Telegraph—Press Association. THAMES, January 27. The Thames by-election takes place to-morrow. There are five candidates standing. Mr Lucas has been selected as Government candidate, Messrs Taylor and Rhodes are Government supporters, Mr Haselden has been selected as Opposition candidate, and Mr Deeble stands as an Oppositionist. The Hon. Jas. M'Govvan, the retiring member, is supporting Mr Lucas' candidature. The election is not exciting great interest, and it is not anticipated that the poll will be heavy. The splitting up of the Government vote may complicate matters. The general opinion is that there will be a second ballot.
