TENNIS.

WAIBAKAPA CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. The Wairaf&pa championship meeting was continued on Saturday last, and favoured with splendid weather, was brought to a successful conclusion about 7 p.m. During the day a Ir.rge number of spectators visited the grounds, and were rewarded by witnessing tennis of a higher grade than that usually seen at an up-country tournament. This was mainly due to the fact that Mr A. F. Wilding, the holder of the New Zealand Championship, and hero of the Davis Cup match, was a competitor at the Tournament. Wilding had no difficulty in winning the Men's Championship Singles, disposing of F. M. B. Fisher in the semi-final 6 1, 6—2, and C. C. Cox, the local champion, in the final 6 —2, 6 —4. In conjunction with his partner, F. M. B. Fisher, he also won the Men's Champiunship Doubles, beating C. C. Co:- and C. H. Broad in the final 6 3, 6—o. Miss D. Meares, of Nelso:>, won the Ladies' Championship Singles, beating Miss Batham, of the Thorndon Club, Wellington, in the final by 9 games to 7. The same lady was also successful in the Combined Championship Doubles, in which event, assisted by her partner, Mr C. C. Cox, she succeeded in defeating Miss Batham and Mr G. S. Prouse in the final by 9 games to 7. All the events on the programme were completed in the two days with the exception of No. 9, Combined Handicap Doubles, the final of which, between S. R. Gawith and Mrs Holmes and J. M. Collins and Miss J. Fitzherbert, has been arranged to take place this morning at 10 o'clock. Taking into consideration the fact that the total entries exceeded 170 in number, and had to be played on five courts, this achievement is one that the managing committee may well feel proud of. Of course it was very hard work for several of the competitors who had to play match after match, but this is absolutely unavoidable when they keep on winning in perhaps two or three events. Judging by the popularity that this Tournament has succeeded in gaining, it will be for those responsible for conducting the next annual fixture to seriously consider the desirability of extending the play over three days. During the progress of the Tournament several of the \isiting players commented on the fact that open tournaments at DannevirkQ at Marton were b°i'jg conducted on the cktes as Masterton meeting, and the opinion was freely expressed that the New Zealand Association Wag not acting in the best interests of tennis genef ally in allowing nieetings in so fiear one another as these to clash; Taken on the wiioie £b)e Tournament is the most successful yet held in Masterton, and rese6£S great credit on the management, amongst whom were Messrs A. K. Sclanders (hon. sec)., C. C. Cox, N. D. Bunting, and H. M. Boddington.
