CHEAP CABLES.

PROPOSED TWOPENNY RATE

Received January 7, 8.30 a.m. OTTAWA, January 6.

The British and Canadian Gover.iments are considering the question of instituting a twopenny Atlantic cable rate, bag-inning in July, if the cable companies agree, and later, if necessary, to lay an Imperial cable across the Atlantic.

Received January 8, 12.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 7. The Postmaster-General approves of cheapening the cables. If the Atlantic rates are reduced to twopence the rates to Australia can be reduced to two and fivspence per word.
