WAIRARAPA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

TH T ,RTY-THIRD ANNUAL' GATHERING. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The thirty-third annual gathering under the auspices of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held on the Showgrounds, Masterton, yesterday. The weather conditions were very favourable, and a large concourse of people from all parts ot the Wairarapa, numbering; between four and five thousand, attended the meeting. The ajnounts taken at\ the gates and grandstand respectively were £l4l 14s 6d, and £26 10s, being slightly less than the amounts taken last year. The' programme was put through without the slightest hitch, and the result was a very enjoyable day's sport. There was keen competition in most ot the events, and several close finishes resulted —at tribute to the handicapper, Mr Ulic Shannon. ' This applies particularly to running I events, there being no less than 27 ! competitors in the 300 yards, 22 in the 100 yards, 21 in the 220 yards, and 36 in the sawing and chopping events. A special feature of the sports wa=3 the Highland dancing, ! and in this Mr J. McKechnie was a | most successful competitor. Special prizes were offered for the most j ' points in Highland dancing, bagpipe ! i music, sawing and chopping events, | the best dressed adult in Highi land costume, the best dressed j boy in Highland costume, the re- ! suits, which are not yet available, | will be looked forward to with keen interest. The running, high jumping and wrestling were particularly interesting, and nf a high-class nature. The arrangements for thefgathering were carried out most capably by an energetic committee, headed b.v Mr J. B. Emmett, who worked unceasingly to make the meeting a success. The Masterton Municipal Band rendered selections at interval s during the day, which added greatly to the enjoyment of the meeting. The results are as follow: —
