RACING.
„ CLUB. ( WAIRARAPA RACING A SUMMER MEETING— FIRST Dn Y " The first day of the summer meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club eventuated yesterday on the Club's course at Tauherenikau. The weather was ideal, and there was in consequence a large attendance of the public. The course looked very attractive, the rain of the day previous having freshened things up. The track could not have we-il been in better o/der, and the going was very fast. The racing was of a very interesting character, some good finishes being witnessed, and the handicapping being such as to give the public plenty of scope for their t'ancy. Speculation on the totalisator was very satisfactory, being quite up to expectations. The totalisator receipts for the day were £9,182, as against £10,160 for New Year's Day last year. Fifteen bookmakers paid license fees for admission to the course, five inside at £2O each, and ten outside at £lO each, 10s extra being levied for a clerk. The starting was done by three officials yesterday. The appointed starter, Mr Allan Donald, had to leave after getting tbrep fields awav, on account of the illneifs ot one of his children. Mr S. Cundy started one race, and Mr J. H. Tilson (Deputy starter) thp balance, and the latter will officiate again to-day. The appoint nents were all carefully attended to, and the day proved most enjoyable. The Secretary (Mr E. A. Laery) and the other officials worked hard to insure success. Following are details of the raciris:—
