TRADE IN THE PACIFIC.
At the present time there is a strong movement in the United States for the remission of the duties upon hides, wool, and other rawmaterials, and nobody would object to a trade which would give New Zealand wider markets for her produce. It is safe to predict, judging by present indications, that before very long Australasia, California, British Columbia, Mexico and the South American States of the Pacific will have developed a mutually advantageous trade o! great dimensions. This has a direct bearing upon mail services, for it justifies the subsidising of fast steamers not only for the carriage of mails, but for the transport of special cargoes and for the accommodation of travellers.
