IMMIGRATION.

All that the Government is doing at present to bring immigrants to New Zealand is to grant some assistance by way of reauced far.es towards passages from the United Kingdom, and for passages for separated families. In 1907-08 the total expenditure amounted to £9,131, and for the current year £IO,OOO wa3 voted. It is worth considering whether it would not be wise to vote a much larger sum next year, so as to take advantage of the fact that so many eligible people are desirous of emigrating from Great Britain to this Dominion. Able-bodied young men of good character and willing to undertake farm labour would be cheap to the Dominion at £l2 or £ls a head.
