CHURCH FUNCTION AT MANGATAINOKA. (Special to Age.) The annual sale of work of St. Mark's Church, Mangatainoka. was brought to a close on Thursday evening, the latter part of the evening being devoted to dancing. Miss Trengiove won the ladies' nail driving competition, and Mr F. Bartosh was successful in pressing the exact weight of two lambs. Messrs Donald and Eastwood's motor-car was in great demand by both young and old, and the car was kept going continuously until midnight. The music for the dancers was supplied by Mr E. Sharp (violin), and T. Dray (piano), extras being kindly played byjMiss Barrell and Mr Colea, and Mr McTavish made an efficient M.C. The bazaar resulted in the sum of between £3O and £4O being raised for the Church. A special word of praise is due to the members of ths Ladies' Guild and all those who unselfishly worked, to make the function a success.
A team of Pahiatua cricketers will journey to Woodville on Saturday afternoon to play a match against a Dannevirke team.
A handsome gift of thirty-one books have been received by the locnl Fire Brigade from jMrs A. Russell, in recognition of the smart manner in which they succeeded in extinguishing the recent fire at the Trocadero. A team from the Masterton Tennis Court will play a local tea.n at the Pahiatua court on Saturday aftern.ion.
Substantial improvements have been effected to the fence around the Catholic' Church, and two iron gates have replaced the old wooden ones.
Mr H. A. Thomson who recently purchased the stationery and fancy goods business here from Mrs Milne, ha 3 just opened an exceptionally fine lot of Christmas gnods, including a wonderful range of dolls and toys. His leather goods, such as purses, wallets, dressing cases, etc, and glassware, are well worthy of inspection. Christmas cards are exhibited in great variety, and his penny postcard views of Pahiatua are splendid productions.
Mr W. Entwistle, cabinetmaker and upholsterer, of Pahiatua, can be relied upon to give the fullest satisfaction with every order turned out by him. He served his apprenticeship in one of the leading London furnishing factories, and necessarily gained at thorough insight into the trade. Since opening in Pahiatua he has turned out some very handsome furniture—the sort that recommends itself to particular people, and which would add lustre to every hoine. Residents throughout the Pahiatua district should extend hearty support to Mr Entwistle,. for they can rely on getting conscientious treatment in any order they p?ace with him. Messrs J. Bentley and Co., who have opened in business in Pahiatua as boot and shoemakers, announce on page 1 of this issue that they intend holding a great price reduction sale extending over the next fourteen days. The stock 'that has been opened up is a large and comprehensive one, embracing all the very best brands of boots and shoes for men, women and children. The public of Pahiatua and district can rest assured that exceptional value for money willl be obtainable during this sale time, as Messrs Bentley and Co. are going to make their opening by offering exceptional inducements to the public to buy from them. They are also prepared to make or repair boots and shoes on the shortest notice at reasonable rates.
