FIRE ON A STEAMER.
By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, October 26. A fire.was discovered in No. 4 hold on board the s.s. Manuka at Pore Chalmers ahout 10.45 p.m. on Saturday. The :rew had been paid off during the day, and the lumpers had knocked off working the cargo. t -About 10.30 b.m. Mr Lilley, the chief officer, found smoke issuing from the No. 4 hold, when he came on board for.the night, and fortunate^/all officers and engineers were on board, most ot them being in bed. They turned out promptly, and soon had the fire under, but owing to the dense siii'ke the fire brigade was summoned, on the assumption that thefire, was serious. It appears ,tq have originated amongst 3ome straw ►arid old canvas. : None of the cargo was damaged, and the loss 13 smalli ;
