UNEMPLOYMENT IN ENGLAND.
Recent cable messages have revealed the fact that there is an appalling number of men out of work all over England at the present time. Private letters received in New Zealand state that the streets of Birming ham, Newcastle, and other large towns, are filled with respectable artisans and labourers thrown out of work by the depression in trade. The official figures published in the "Labour Gazette" show ..in incontrovertible fashion how serious the position has become. At the end of June, the percentage of unemployed in the 268 Trade Unions making returns was 8.3. This statement was based solely on returns made direct to the Labour Department by various Trade Unions which pay unemployed benefit to their members. Taking the whole labour market it is probable that the percentage of unemployed would be heavier still. The fact that this unfortunate state of affairs was recorded at the very height of the summer, and that England is now entering on the winter season, makes the outlook all the more disquieting.
