WANT OP CONFIDENCE MOTION. MR DEAKIN IN REPLY. Received October 21, 10.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 21. The Prime Minister (Mr Deakin), repiying to Mr Reid's uttack, said that so far from being extravagant the Government had been rigorously economical. The sums returned to the States had gone up in a gratifying fashion, but tha States were far from satisfied. On the question of Commonwealth borrowing, he said it was essential that soma understanding should be arrived at between the Commonwealth and the States. He added that it would be with the utmost reluctance that he would see the Common we.-.] th embark on a borrowing policy. The Government was carrying out a policy which the people of Australia wera more and more corning to appreciate, and were carrying it with the assistance of the Labour party with whom its relations were entirely in accord.
