OPPORTUNISM.
Probably never before in our political history has opportunism been carried to such unblushing lengths, j Ministers have shown that their sole desire is to retain office. In order to keep in power they are prepared to chop and change their policy in any manner that is likely to secure the most votes. Commenting on the subject the New Zealand "Herald" says that Ministers have no fixed principles or convictions, or, at all events, they have no intention of risking defeat by a sturdy and loyal adherence to them. They are office holders pure and simple. Curiously enough, the Parliament ends as it began, with Mr Hall-Jones in the limelight. He met it as a stop-gap Premier; ha quits it as the new High Commissioner. The appointment is a reward for political services. It may also be a convenient method of getting rid of a possible rival.
