AMERICAN CAPITAL IN CANADA.

A hundred and fifty important in-

dustries have now been established in Canada by United States capital, nearly all since 1897, and a hundred and twenty-two leading United States firms have established branches in the Dominion. In 1907, 58,312 immigrants came into Canada from the United States, bringing with them property of the estimated value of £9,800,000. This immigration, of course, has been a large factor in the upbuilding of the West. The investment ofc' United States capital

and the increase in the population from the United States, has had the further effect of contributing largely to the increased demand tor United States products, despite the preferential tariff between Canada and the Mother Country, states a recent American Consular report on Canadian trade. The complaint of the increased cost of living has become quite general in Canada, a circumatence attributed in part to the fact that there is a' gradual equalisation to the cost of living in the United States.
